The Kalmiopsis region, is itself named for the rare plant Kalmiopsis leachiana that is found only here. Aptly named, the Kalmiopsis is extremely rich in endemic plants (specialized to grow only here) due to its unique serpentine geology, complex topography, and glacial history.
Great value lies in the botanical riches of the Kalmiopsis wildlands. The South Kalmiopsis hosts the highest concentration of rare endemic plants in the Klamath-Siskiyou Region and one of the highest in North America. Rough and Ready Creek, as an example, is home to the highest diversity of wildflowers in Oregon. Learn more about designated Botanical Areas of this region.
